Academic Probation

Academic probation is a means of warning students of their seriously inadequate performance. It is intended to convey to students that unless significant improvement occurs, they will fall behind their grade level and be unable to continue at Geneva. A student is placed on ACADEMIC PROBATION under the following conditions:

  1. The student earns a “D” (65%-69%) in any two subjects in a quarter or an “F” (64% or below) in any one subject in a quarter. The student will be on academic probation until at least the midpoint of the following quarter, or perhaps longer if poor performance persists.
  2. The student is issued, in the same quarter, two at-risk reports that reflect the grades of “D” or one at-risk report that informs of an “F.”
  3. The student fails a course for the first semester. Failing a semester places the student in danger of not earning credit for the year. The student will be on probation until at least the midpoint of the following quarter (quarter three).
  4. The student fails a course for the second semester. In addition to taking a summer course to earn the credit, the student will be on probation until at least the midpoint of the following quarter (quarter one) if no remedial efforts are completed (see below).

There are ten checkpoints during the school year that serve as warnings for inadequate academic performance: the mid-point of each quarter (four times per year), the end of each quarter(four times per year), the first semester grade (one time per year) and the final grade (one time per year).Failure to meet academic standards for any of these checkpoints results in the student being placed on academic probation for at least one-half quarter.

Students on academic probation are not allowed to participate in any Geneva athletic or Fine Arts events and competitions such as athletic games or scrimmages, Fine Arts competitions or events, or academic competitions (excluding 8th grade Oratory and Debate). Students also cannot attend any of these events if they occur during the school day. Students are expected to attend athletics and Fine Arts practices unless otherwise specified by the students’ coach, parents, teacher or Logic School administration. In such cases where a student is not permitted to attend practice for the purposes of focusing on academics, then students will be directed to a scheduled study hall during athletic times. Once the school day is completed, students may leave study hall and continue to practice at the permission of the athletic coach. Students on academic probation are also not permitted to attend school field trips (excluding Washington D.C. trip) or participate in any field day activities.

Students must remain on probation at least one-half quarter, unless all grades are not passing at the expiration of the probation. After one-half quarter, grades are checked weekly to assess the student’s eligibility to be removed from academic probation. Probation continues until grades are brought to a passing level. Students who are placed on academic probation at the end of the school year must participate in remedial academic strategies before the following school year. These remedial academic strategies will be determined by the Logic School Headmaster and tailored to each individual student. Remedial academic strategies may include tutoring, summer courses, extra-coursework, etc. A meeting with the Logic School Headmaster and the students’ parents will occur prior to the beginning of the summer break to discuss and determine the course of action. Failure to meet these remedial opportunities may result in the student being placed on academic probation in the first quarter of the following school year. Eighth grade students who are placed on academic probation at the end of the school year will defer to the requirements of the Rhetoric School for the summer and following Freshman year.

Once the above conditions are met, the student is removed from academic probation, at which time eligibility for prohibited activities is regained. A student may be reconsidered for eligibility if his or her grades are at a passin level by the time at the end of one-half quarter.

If a student is placed on academic probation, a notification will be made to the parents when the final report card goes out, confirming the probationary status. The notification will require student and parental acknowledgement. The Logic School Headmaster has discretionary authority on all academic probationary cases for the purposes of supporting a students’ academic success.
